Custom GameDev OS™: Course Viewer
The figure illustrates the description page of a course that is displayed when clicking the course in the course catalog. The page provides information on the course and an “enroll button” for enrolling in the course. Videos are played using Microsoft Windows Media player. Other video players can also be used, such as our Web browser plug-in. We use Microsoft Windows Media player because it is widely adopted. Our Web browser plug-in can be used after it is downloaded and installed. The course viewer provides a list of classes that are illustrated on the right side of the figure. The first class (class 00: course information) is illustrated in the figure. The class information page provides information on the course and enrolment information. The following classes are videos that provide classes on specific topics. The classes are typically one to two hours in length. At the bottom right side, of the figure, are links to materials and references. Materials typically include instructional materials and assignments. References typically include links to scheduling a test, as well as other interesting articles on the subjects. Instructional material may be provided with the course. A reference to a textbook for the course can also be provided. Assignments are usually provided as Adobe PDF documents that can be downloaded. Different assignments can be provided to different students, to avoid copying of assignment reports between students. Tests are scheduled by selecting a preferred date and submitting the request to the course advisor that will plan and prepare the test with the student. Tests can be performed online, with the instructor, or at a physical test institution. A problem with online tests is that it is more difficult to ensure the identity of the student, and ensure that the student is not receiving help from others. The transcripts will provide whether the test was conducted online or whether the test was conducted at a physical test institution. Assignments are performed in the GameDev OS that provides a log of user actions. The log is inspected by the advisor to ensure that the user has actually performed the assignment (and not copied the results). Assignments and projects can also be performed at a physical institution. The transcripts will provide whether the assignments and projects were performed online or at a physical institution.
